Russia is currently drafting suggestions to pay back part of its debt to the Paris Club of creditor nations ahead of schedule, the Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said on Wednesday. Being currently in Tokyo and coordinating the agenda of a meeting with his colleagues from the G8, Kudrin told reporters that Russia’s remaining debt to the Paris Club was about $21.5 billion. It includes about $9 billion, which the country was not yet allowed to pay back. High prices on global commodity markets have given Russia considerable place to maneuver in its repayment plans. If the government accepted the ministry’s proposals, they would become a topic for further discussions with the Paris Club. A further $2.3 billion was given back on Aug. 19 and 22 to another five creditors, which include Austria, Belgium, Japan, Norway and Spain. The minister said, that Russia would save $5 billion by paying off the $18 billion.
