“The Love for Three Oranges” in Opera Bastille (2005-12-20)

December promises to be a good month for the opera-lovers – in Paris a new version of “The Love for Three Oranges” is presented. It’s an opera written by the famous Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev – one of his best works, for sure. His first comic opera, “The Love for Three Oranges” was created under the influence of the Italian “mask comedy”, very popular at that time. The libretto bases on a play by Carlo Gozzi, great 18th-century dramatist from Venice. The opera tells a story of the charmed prince who can be released only by the orange juice, which produces love. Firstly the Opera was based in Russia in 1926. Now the opera is performed in Opera Bastille from 1 to 29 December. The special thing about the opera is that is sung in French. It’s performed by Opera national de Paris orchestra and choir and is conducted by Sylvain Cambreling.
